Journey with Oaxaca’s renowned master bird guide Manuel Grosselet and Travelian’s knowledgeable guides to the varied landscape of Oaxaca for an exciting and remarkable bird-watching adventure! Stay in comfortable modern hotels and ride in safe vans with outstanding drivers. Visit the high oak forests of Benito Juarez National Park for bird watching at Arroyo Guacamayas. Some of our target species: Oaxaca sparrow, Boucard’s Wren, Red Warbler, Dwarf Jay and White-throated Towhee.

Drive to Teotitlan del Valle, the Yagul Archeological Site and the route to the lowlands of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec for more bird-watching. Some of our target species: Bridled Sparrow, Oscellated Thrasher, Beautiful Hummingbird, Pileated Flycatcher.

In the Isthmus visit the higher elevation forest of La Mata and the shores of Laguna Superior, Santa Maria Xadani. After lunch in Juchitan drive to Huatulco birding along the route. Some of our target species: Rose-bellied Bunting, Cinnamon-tailed Sparrow, and the Lesser Ground-cuckoo.

Have an extra day off to relax and birdwatch on your own or join one of our optional tours (A boat ride to the Bays of Huatulco for pelagic birding, snorkeling and lunch, or go on a birding tour of Copalita Eco –Archeological Park).

Early the next morning visit the Huatulco National Park for bird-watching. Stop for lunch at Playa Maguey. Travelers may stay at the beach and enjoy swimming. Our driver will pick up travelers at designated times to return to the hotel. Some of our target species: Flammulated Flycatcher, Colima Pygmy Owl, and the Red-breasted Chat.

The following morning travel up 4,000 feet to Pluma Hidalgo’s cloud forest for a full day of bird-watching. Enjoy lunch at a lovely lodge. Some of our target species: Blue-capped Hummingbird, Grey-crowned Woodpecker, Grace’s Warbler, Golden Vireo.

The next day our location is at lower elevation in the lush tropical forest of a beautiful eco tropical garden, where we’ll enjoy breakfast birding-watching, and a delicious lunch. The site is next to the pristine Magdalena River for those of you who wish to take a refreshing swim be sure to bring along your bathing suits! We’ll travel to Puerto Escondido after our morning and early afternoon of birding in the gardens. Some of our target species: Citreoline Trogon, Russet-crowned Motmot, and the Orange-breasted Bunting.

The following morning we leave for a boat ride to visit many species of birds in Laguna de Manialtepec. This Lagoon is four miles long with remarkable mangroves filled with nesting birds. Lunch and birding will take place on a sandbank between the ocean and the lagoon. Some of our target species: Roseate Spoonbill, Mangrove Vireo, Magnificient Frigatebirds, and Wood storks, and many other water birds.

On our last day we’ll enjoy a leisurely breakfast and check out of the hotel. This is the end of our tour. Some travelers may wish to stay longer, fly to Oaxaca City, or be driven back to Huatulco (we can arrange a private driver for you). Others may wish to return with our Travelian guides who will be departing that morning for our flight to Mexico City. Please check our itinerary for details.

The list of bird species we’ve given you are a fraction of what you’ll be witnessing. We look forward to having you join us for this action-packed birding adventure in beautiful Oaxaca!
